Logan Beckett

Age: 19 (Ch. 1-30); 22 (Epilogue)
Affiliation: USHL (The Winter Wolves); Team USA (Epilogue)
Birthdate: April 28th
Biography:

Born and raised predominantly by a single mom (Eliza Beckett), Logan loved hockey as soon as he was old enough to sit in front of the television and watch NHL replays. He enrolled in hockey at age five and spent the next fourteen years chasing the thrill on the ice.

However, while hockey stood at the pinnacle of his life, his home life deteriorated rapidly. His biological father (Edward) regularly abused his mom and left them permanently after episodic bouts of shitty parenting when Logan was around thirteen. Around the same time, his mom became pregnant with his little brother, and Logan learned how to step up to the plate, losing the rest of his childhood to be an older brother.

He continued playing hockey past his high school graduation. He couldn't afford to leave Waybrook for college, even if offered a scholarship. So, he started trade school for electrician training and stayed in the amateur league with the Waybrook Winter Wolves with his closest friends until the events of the book.

Despite the troubles he faced throughout his life, Logan retains a good head on his shoulders. He cares for the people in his life, family, and friends, and adheres to a solid moral code. He's passionate, soft once exposed past a prickly exterior, and the definition of loyal to the things and people he loves.
FUN FACTS ABOUT LOGAN:
  • Logan has a defined taste in music, which is mentioned explicitly in the book. His taste combines classic rock and punk/alternative rock from the 80s to the early aughts. However, his favorite artist from that description is early Fall Out Boy.
    • From Under the Cork Tree is the only named album referenced in the book.
  • Unsurprisingly, Logan's favorite color is blue, and it is around him in the design of the Winter Wolves uniform.
  • He's 6'4", a towering figure for such a young man, and that sets him as one of the taller members of the team.
  • While on away games, he and Marc were the teammates responsible for snack runs to gas stations or local convenience stores, favoring a balance of protein and sweets instead of pure junk food.
  • Despite any complaints, Logan loves running. The act forces him to escape problems and clear his head with the fresh air around Waybrook.
  • If he could eat only one meal for the rest of his life, it would be the cheeseburger and fries combo from Martha's.

Averie "Ava" Laurier

Age: 18 (Ch. 1-13); 19 (Ch. 14-30); 21 (Epilogue)
Affiliation: Team USA/ USA Skating (Ch. 1-30; Epilogue)
Birthdate: October 4th
Biography:

Born in the United States but moved around until settling in New York at ten, figure skating was in her blood. Her mother (Katrina Laurier) was once a famed figure skater whose promising career ended early due to an injury. When Ava demonstrated an interest early on, Katrina put her into intensive ballet and skate training.

Despite the harsh conditions imposed by her mother and the absentee nature of her father (Liam Laurier), Ava thrived as a skater. Her skills improved by miles in the junior division when she contracted to work with Korin Ohashi, a former Olympic skater from Japan, as her coach. Ava's career brought her to the top of the skating world, scoring championship titles at the national and international levels. She consistently podiumed and maintained an image as a graceful, delicate princess of skating. However, things began to falter a few years into her senior division.

Introduced to a horrid boyfriend in Brian and under her mother's thumb for everything, Ava's love for skating deteriorated until she considered quitting altogether. Desperate to save her career, she bargained with her parents to spend a season in Michigan with Korin on the condition that she win gold at every tournament.

Ava is known for her kind heart, an optimistic outlook on life, and how she moves gracefully through life. Although socially naive from isolation, she strives to make people happy above herself.
FUN FACTS ABOUT AVA:
  • Ava loves the color purple, choosing it as the color she most predominantly wears. The color of mauve, more specifically, is the exact shade she chose for her bedroom walls.
  • Ava's skating style is defined as artistry-focused while balancing her challenging but consistent technical choreography, strategic about the placement of jumps and spins in her routine to tell a story.
    • Her "signature move" is a quad flip jump, a crowd pleaser.
  • Ava's fans are known as "Laurier Lambs" because she made lambs as her symbol after she kept a plushie at her first competition.
  • If she could travel anywhere in the world, Ava would want to spend two weeks in the French countryside to enjoy a quiet stay.
  • Ava has a love-hate relationship with figure skating movies because they're terribly inaccurate but she can't look away when they have romance, no matter how cliche.
  • Despite living in New York, she hates the hustle of the city and prefers a softer, quiet environment to focus on herself.
